Diabetes is nowadays affecting our current population at a much higher scale. This is a curable disease which can be taken care of, by managing diet and exercise in day to day life. Here are some important points related to lifestyle which every diabetic should be aware of.

1. Monitor your Blood glucose

Blood glucose is the main tool to keep a check on your diabetes control. So, it becomes important for a diabetic to measure the levels regularly.

2. Exercise

Exercise is the most natural way to help manage your sugar. Glucose is metabolized better in the body, when you exercise. Muscle movement leads to greater sugar uptake by muscle cells and helps lower blood sugar levels.

3. Watch your carbohydrates

It is important to keep a routine meal schedule, without skipping meals, and to accompany each carbohydrate with a protein. Grab more of complex carbohydrates present in whole grains, vegetables.

4. Say 'No' to Artificial Sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners may disrupt body's ability to regulate blood sugar, causing metabolic changes that can be a precursor to diabetes. Stop the use of sugar substitutes in your day to day life.

5. Maintain Ideal Body Weight

Obesity is the root cause of lifestyle diseases. If you are overweight as well as diabetic, you should start maintaining your weight by diet and exercising.

6. Maintain your cholesterol levels

Diabetes, if not managed properly, over a time can affect cholesterol levels. To be on a safer side, cholesterol should get checked once in every year.

7. Add fiber in your diet

In people with diabetes, fiber particularly soluble fiber like oats, nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables can slow the absorption of sugar and help improve blood sugar levels. A healthy diet that includes insoluble fiber may also reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

8.  Get eye check ups

High blood sugar in diabetes causes the lens of the eye to swell, which changes your ability to see. To correct this kind of eye problem, it is important to go for regular eye checkups.

9. Get feet checkup done

Just like the annual eye check-up, an yearly feet check-up should also be done if you are diabetic.  

10. Take care of your kidneys

If you have diabetes, then over a period of time, this might damage your kidneys. To be on the safer side, go for kidney test at least 2 times in an year.
